[ 05 // STUDIO METHODOLOGY ] FIVE PHASES // 10–12 WEEKS

How the studio works, step-by-step.

Good work is not an accident of spontaneous genius; it is the inevitable consequence of a quiet, rigorous sequence. We guide every project through five distinct phases of inquiry, subtraction, and physical production.

01

Listen

TIMELINE: 2 WEEKS

"Discovery without interrogation. Quiet observation of what already exists."

We do not show up with predetermined answers or slide decks full of buzzwords. We spend the first two weeks in deep listening mode: reviewing archival files, inspecting your current physical artifacts, interviewing core founders and patrons, and auditing the landscape of competitors.

We uncover the single sentence that describes your enterprise at its most concentrated essence. If we cannot explain what you do in twelve words, we do not start drafting.

02

Draft Wide

TIMELINE: 2–3 WEEKS

"We explore too many directions, then cut."

In the drafting phase, the studio table is covered in hundreds of ink sketches, type specimens, substrate cutouts, and color swatches. We explore divergent paths—pushing typography, layout grids, and voice into contrasting territories to map the boundaries of what is possible.

Then we edit ruthlessly. Before presenting to you, we discard 80% of our own sketches. We only show you work that has survived our internal gauntlet of structural criticism.

03

Narrow

TIMELINE: 2 WEEKS

"One direction, refined."

Together with your leadership team, we evaluate the presentations not on subjective whims, but against the foundational thesis established in Step 01. We select one single trajectory and commit to it fully.

We spend this phase dialing in micro-details: adjusting optical kerning curves by fractions of a millimeter, calibrating Pantone and Riso ink recipes, and testing paper weights against real handling pressures.

04

Build

TIMELINE: 3–4 WEEKS

"Production-ready files, systems, guidelines."

Here the system expands into all agreed-upon physical and digital touchpoints. We draft master vector packaging dielines, engineer semantic and responsive web templates, set environmental signage drawings, and create high-resolution master asset packages.

We conduct physical press checks, standing next to the Heidelberg offset cylinders or digital proofers to ensure that ink density, paper grain, and fold tolerances match our rigorous studio standards.

Release

TIMELINE: 1–2 WEEKS

"Launch support + a one-page usage guide, not a 40-page brand bible."

We don't abandon you with a giant folder of mystery files. We assist in launching the new work to your customers and partners, oversee site deployments, and verify printer deliveries.

Crucially, we arm your staff with our signature Single-Sheet Brand Codex: a laminated 11x17 letterpress cheat sheet displaying exact font hierarchies, hex codes, paper stocks, and spacing rules. Anyone on your team can understand and execute it in 60 seconds.
