Designing for serial variation without visual fatigue.

Modular sleeve system for a boutique tape label — 40 releases, one grid, infinite variation.

Northbound produces short-run physical cassettes for experimental ambient, drone, and field-recording artists across the upper Midwest. As their catalog grew, designing bespoke sleeves from scratch for every release was bankrupting the small label's time and budget. They needed a single foundational design architecture that would honor each artist's distinct sound while clearly anchoring them under Northbound's tactile umbrella.

CLIENT DIRECTIVE
"The tapes have to look like archival audio artifacts from a weather observatory, not merchandise."

Structure, substrate, and serial numbering.

[ STEP 01 ]

The 12-Column J-Card Matrix

We drafted a mathematical dieline tailored precisely to the fold of standard Norelco cassette cases. Spine widths, inner flaps, and track duration columns were locked into a strict monospace coordinate grid. This ensured that whether an album had four 20-minute ambient pieces or eighteen micro-sketches, the typography slotted into the grid without breaking hierarchy.

[ STEP 02 ]

Substrate Chemistry: Recycled Fiber Tooth

We rejected glossy coated stocks in favor of a 100% post-consumer unbleached kraft board manufactured in Michigan. We tested eight varieties for fiber stiffness to prevent sleeve bowing. The final chosen stock has visible wood flecks and an open tooth that binds densely with offset vegetable oil inks.

[ STEP 03 ]

Four-Ink Production Formula

To maintain production economy, we limited the entire label to four spot inks: Deep Carbon, Rust Ink (#B5502D), Bone White, and Pine Needle. By ganging eight releases on a single large sheet fed through an Heidelberg offset press, production costs were cut by more than half while preserving bespoke physical fidelity.

Speed, continuity, and an avid collector base.

All 40 scheduled releases for the 2025/2026 calendar were standardized onto the template, selling out limited editions within hours of catalog drop.

Because the spine formatting and catalog coordinates align in chronological order, Northbound tapes have become coveted shelf objects among audio purists worldwide.
