A century-old butcher counter needed a mark that felt as honest as the cuts on the block. We built the identity around a single die-stamp logo and unbleached paper stock.
Over nine decades of family ownership, Marrow had accumulated four competing logos, laminated menu boards, and glossy sticker labels that contradicted the raw craftsmanship of whole-animal butchery. The owners approached Faint Signal not for modern gloss, but for radical reduction: an identity that looked as though it could have existed in 1924, yet performed flawlessly across contemporary supply chains.
"If it requires lamination, special foil stamping, or synthetic plastic wrap, we don't want it on our counters."
— CALEB VOGEL, THIRD-GENERATION MASTER BUTCHER
We spent five days in the basement vaults of the Portland facility examining original receipt ledgers, wooden shipping crates, and hand-cut stencils from the 1920s. We discovered that the original founders never used a pictorial icon—only heavy serif block capitals inked directly onto greaseproof craft paper. We chose to discard fourteen prospective animal mascot illustrations and return solely to pure letterforms.
Newsreader and custom optical display cuts were adapted specifically for high-absorbency paper. When cold meat is wrapped and stamped, moisture causes porous kraft stock to expand ink edges by 0.25mm. We optically loosened the tracking and opened the counter-spaces of the letters so the mark sharpens rather than blurs under real counter conditions.
Rather than ordering thousands of pre-printed plastic stickers, we machined two heavy solid-brass rocker hand-stamps and supplied custom water-based, vegetable-derived rust ink. Every package wrapped by the apprentice butchers is hand-stamped in three seconds, creating an authentic, varied human artifact for every customer.
The identity system eliminated five separate pre-printed plastic SKUs, re-establishing Marrow as Portland's undisputed beacon of unadorned butchery craft.
Within six months of deployment, customer surveys noted a 74% increase in brand memorability, and the wholesale restaurant division expanded to 28 new regional accounts using identical kraft presentation packaging.
