When the interface gets in the way of the lens.

A portfolio framework built to disappear behind the work.

Overcast is an eight-member collective of documentary and architectural photographers whose images have appeared in The New York Times, Aperture, and Domus. Their prior website suffered from the affliction common to modern agency templates: sticky headers that covered 25% of the viewport, aggressive hover overlays, and autoplay transitions that wrecked the contemplative stillness of silver gelatin prints.

CLIENT DIRECTIVE
"The best digital gallery is like a white room in Chelsea: bare floor, clean light, no signs telling you how to feel."

— JULIETTE VANE, OVERCAST COLLECTIVE LEAD

Elimination, optical framing, and responsive scale.

[ STEP 01 ]

The Invisibility Principle

We conducted an exhaustive audit of portfolio clutter. We eliminated thumbnail carousels, social sharing widgets, and animated cursor followers. The navigation was reduced to two hairline buttons in the bottom margin, granting 94% of the browser's pixel area solely to high-resolution photography.

[ STEP 02 ]

Viewfinder HUD & Archival Metadata

Rather than hiding technical context, we added subtle viewfinder framing marks and an unobtrusive 11px monospace data strip: film stock, focal length, shutter timing, and year of print. This honors the craft of documentary photography without demanding center stage.

[ STEP 03 ]

Paper Warmth in a Digital Medium

Pure `#000000` or sterile `#FFFFFF` digital backgrounds flatten photographic tonal range. We matched the background tone to Ilford Warmtone photographic paper (`#F5F2EC`), allowing black-and-white grain to maintain delicate highlights and velvety shadow detail.

Resonant quietude and institutional recognition.

The site was lauded as a benchmark for contemporary photography presentation, driving unprecedented curatorial engagement for the collective.

Within eight months, collective members booked four solo museum exhibitions and secured two major monograph publishing deals.
