Low Tide Press is a micro-publisher releasing quarterly chapbooks on marine biology, coastal ecology, and Pacific Northwest maritime history. Their publications are printed on vintage Riso GR3770 machines. They commissioned Faint Signal to design their publishing identity and an e-commerce reading archive that wouldn't lose the warmth, bleed, and optical layering of physical soy ink when viewed on a backlit smartphone.
"Screens are sterile and cold. We want our website to feel like you just picked up a fresh zine still smelling of rice bran oil."
— ARLO WEST, PUBLISHER & PRINTER
We spent four days on-site at Low Tide's Ballard workshop running drum passes of custom Rust (#B5502D) and Deep Marine Teal (#3A6972). We embraced the natural mechanical drum slip of 0.3mm to 0.5mm, treating the resulting halo effect as an organic design asset rather than an error.
In the digital reader, we leveraged native CSS `mix-blend-mode: multiply` on high-contrast duotone imagery over unbleached cream backgrounds. This recreates the transparent overlay of physical wet inks without requiring slow image processing libraries.
We engineered an open-source InDesign and PDF imposition template for their saddle-stitch zines. Each signature uses a single 11x17 sheet folded twice, trimmed cleanly, and bound with copper wire staples for effortless quarterly self-publishing.
Low Tide sold out every copy of their first four quarterly publications, with orders streaming from Tokyo, Berlin, and London.
The digital translation has been hailed as one of the few examples where a print studio's physical ethos translated faithfully to web screens.
