Fielding & Vance
Restraint as credibility — a legal mark and collateral system with no ornament to hide behind.

Fielding & Vance is an elite appellate litigation and constitutional law practice based in Philadelphia. Over thirty years, law firm branding had devolved into clichés of marble columns, gold leaf seals, and aggressive litigation slogans. Senior partners Arthur Fielding and Diane Vance sought to reset the standard: a presentation so calm, measured, and typographic that its authority is unquestionable before a word is spoken.
"In appellate court, the lawyer who shouts is losing. Our brand must project the quiet confidence of an airtight legal brief."
— DIANE VANCE, SENIOR PARTNER
We began by issuing a strict prohibition against all gavels, scales, laurel wreaths, and serif flourishes. The mark was constructed solely through proportion, precise tracking, and custom glyph cuts of the ampersand, balanced to perfection on an unyielding horizontal axis.
Rather than gold foil or colored ink, the primary mark on correspondence cards is completely blind-debossed. It leaves a 1.2mm physical impression into heavy unbleached cotton rag. The mark is read not by color, but by the cast shadows created by ambient daylight on the desk.
We overhauled every internal brief, contract, and appellate submission into a unified typographic system. Margins, line-spacing, citation footnotes, and monospace docket tags were systematized into simple word processor and LaTeX templates, saving attorneys dozens of formatting hours weekly.
Fielding & Vance experienced their most successful business development year to date, securing counsel on three prominent federal circuit appeals.
Clients and judicial clerks frequently remark on the exceptional readability and unpretentious elegance of the firm's physical paperwork.
